Ibiza, or Eivissa, is the third largest in the Balearics, and together with Formentera it forms the "Islas Pitiusas", which is Greek for "islands of pine trees".
Ibiza boasts of its long history. Many different civilizations left their mark on the culture of this island which is what accounts for the extreme hospitable nature of the people in this island. In the past it was a Carthaginian colony and later it fell under the Romans, following a relatively short time period under the Vandals and the Byzantines, and then eventually fell under Moorish domination around the year 707. It later fell back upon Christian force under King Jaime I "the Conqueror".
At present, The island welcomes on its shores more than a million tourists of varying backgrounds every year - hippies, nudists, and night clubbers-every year.
Notorious as the ultimate party place, Ibiza is the birthplace of the rave, and houses some of Spain's biggest and most famous discos where a huge crowd of party people gather round to dance and mingle until the early streaks of sunrise peaks at Ibiza's horizon.
But for those who seek peace and quiet, they can enjoy and bask in the sun with the gentle waves of the many beaches in this island. Or one can simply enjoy a walk around town where one may catch a view of the renowned "Gods Finger" which is a piece of rock jutting out of the sea.
