AGUILAS

A truly impressive port city, Aguilas is situated in the southeastern part of Spain. Seafaring at Aguilas is combined with a vast selection of tourist facilities making it an interesting point of destination in Spain. The city has made the most of its extensive coastline, which is one of its main attractions. Being an old Roman fishing port, which began operation in 1785 during the Enlightenment period, locals and tourists regard it as an important port of exit for the products of Murcia's fertile fields. In the 19th century, it became a major mining enclave. Silver and lead from nearby mines were brought into ships for export making it another important source of income for the locals.

Aguila's coastline stretches up to 34 kilometres. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the regions of Murcia, Aguilas boasts of its urban beaches and scuba diving areas as well as the area's average temperature. Solitary beaches with crystalline water and caves can also be found in the beautiful town of Aguilas.

Other popular tourist destinations in Aguilas include the lovely gardens of Plaza de Espaņa's where rubber plants abound, the San Jose parish church where the image of their patron saint is kept, and the 19th century City Hall. There is also the railway monument, Food Market, and the San Juan de Aguilas castle-fortress in the upper part of town that was built in 1570 as a defense.
