CARTAGENA
Cartagena is a major seaport in the Mediterranean Sea. A walled town and an ideal location for a fine harbour and naval base in the autonomous community of Murcia, Cartagena is uniquely situated on the Mediterranean Coasts that boasts of very impressive architecture and a rich history.The town remains to be one of the most important ports in Spain having been once a major naval seaport in the time of King Philip II. Founded by the Carthaginian, the city was placed in the map of Spain in 230 BC under the leadership of General Hasdrubal (Carthago Nova). When Scipio took it in 209 BC, it became one of the wealthiest cities in the world and was once known to feature mines where Hannibal got his silver.
Locals as well as travellers will find a great number of fabulous and scenic views from government buildings to old castles. Cartagen is a city so beautiful where old buildings have been recently restored and preserved and where the Peral Submarine, the Roman Ampitheater, and an impressive naval base can be found.
The Artillery Headquarters, naval museum, Midshipman School, Dockyard Gate, and the Naval Headquarters are located in a naval base in Cartagena. The large base covers the whole city of Cartagena making it a very ideal base for navy operations.
Cartagena also boasts of many interesting archaeological sites that include the remains of the old city. There are parks and squares that locals and tourists can visit to relax. In Cartagena, there is also a vast selection of bars and restaurants that specialize in seafood cuisine and serve delectable international and local dishes. The city’s beautiful port and beaches allow travellers and locals to enjoy cycling, hiking, and horse riding, as well as water sports activities such as diving to windsurfing to sailing.
