CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA
Amidst the fertile valley of Almanzora River lays one of the oldest towns in the province of Almeria…the breathtaking town of Cuevas del Almanzora. It was aptly named ‘Cuevas del Almanzora’ because of the artificial caves strewn in the nearby hills. Miners inhabited these caves in the 19th century when silver was first discovered. Prosperity of this town can be greatly attributed to the silver that was mined in the mountains of Sierra Alamagera. Silver became the primary income of the locals and even attracted a lot of attention from foreign fortune hunters.The grandeur of the silver age has left an incredible mark to the various infrastructures in Cuevas del Almanzora. The legacy left by the affluent mining barons can still be seen through the grand old family houses. Stunning statues, churches and avenues are also a sight to behold; most of these can be found around the town hall and in the Plaza de la Constitucion.
Among these impressive structures, an 18th century Baroque style church stands out – the Parish Church dela Encarnacion. It displays a painting of the Last Supper and was regarded as a national monument in 1982. Other must-see structures in town are the Castillo de Cuevas del Almanzora, which was a fortress built in the 16th century but at present it houses historical monuments, the Museum of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture, Cuevas Archaeology Museum, and the Archive and Municipal Library. The Hermitage of San Pedro de Alclala (patron saint of Cuevas del Almanzora), and the Convent of San Antonio are also famous for their facade and religious importance.
Of course a visit to Cuevas del Almanzora would not be complete without a trip to the reason why the town was named as such. The most famous cave dwellings have become the favourite of locals and tourists. It is near Terrera del Caguerin, which has five levels of abandoned caves.
Moreover, the Fuenta Alamo, found in the foothills of Sierra de Almagro, is another interesting find because of its significance to archaeology and prehistoric settlements.
