JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA

Famous for its sweet wines and its fine horses, is Jerez de la Frontera.

Historically, it was the frontier between the Moorish and Christian realms from the 13th to 15th centuries, but it is most famous for its sweet fortified wines made from local grapes, which the British pronounced as "sherry". Thus, it led to its name Jerez de la Frontera.

The distinctive wine in Jerez has been exported for centuries and it was even praised by the famed poet Shakespeare. Tourists who have sampled famous Jerez "sherry" usually head out for a tour in the various cellars or bodegas that can be found in this town. Often these sherry houses are beautiful buildings set in magnificent gardens, making it a leisurely experience for most who want to see the countryside.

Jerez is also renowned for its fine, sleek horses and is home to the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art. It even pays homage to these horses in an annual Horse Fair celebrated at the beginning of May.

A city of well-heeled and beautiful people, Jerez is also a hotspot for brilliant singers and dancers of flamenco, with its Centro Andaluz de Flamenco (Andalucian Flamenco Center). Flamenco dancing is a significant part of the town's culture. Perhaps with the courage of a little sherry, one can tap their shoes and try the Flamenco!
